merridia: (Blame the alien)
Okay, so it's been a pretty busy week!! I went to two AEW shows in two provinces and my city may or may not be about to catch on fire again. Briefly, in order:

Wednesday: Drove to Edmonton with mom! Went to Dynamite! Orange beat Trent via turnbuckle shenanigans! GOOD TIMES. We had a lovely late lunch with my grandmother's sisters and then stayed at a Days Inn downtown after their psychotic dog bit my finger. It still hurts!!

Thursday: There was a fire truck parked outside of Rexall while I ran in to get myself a hairbrush, since I'd forgotten to pack one, and while my mom was waiting for me, the sirens and lights suddenly came on and all the firefighters came running out of the nearby grocery store clutching their bananas and bread and whatnot. Pretty cute! Foreshadowing???? Anyway, then mom went home and I took one of my elderly aunts (the other one had thankfully taken psycho dog out to their lake lot for the weekend) out to a bookstore and the theatre. Finally grabbed myself Dune Messiah and the Young Bucks' autobiography. A quarter of a century later, The Phantom Menace remains a pretty bad movie.

Friday: After a nice walk around the neighbourhood and a few episodes of Jeopardy! with my aunt, I headed off to the airport and thence to Vancouver! Navigated the metro ALL BY MYSELF to get to Gastown and checked in at the hostel, and then spent the rest of the night wandering around downtown and hitting up movie theatres. Saw the original Mad Max and The Fall Guy in DBOX. Good times.

Saturday: Collision!! I don't think I've ever been more hopeful of them just deciding to call an audible during a match than I was during KOR vs. Cope, like obviously Edge ain't dropping that belt to anyone lower on the card than Malakai, but goddamnit, for those beautiful twenty minutes, precious scrungly Kyle made me believe. That building adored him, and his reaction post-match almost made me cry!!! Fantastic show, fantastic crowd, great note to end the last couple weeks of travel on. Rachael Ellering got injured during the ROH taping afterward, though. :( Then afterward, I was so thirsty that I went to see Tarot just for the excuse to drink some pop. Bad movie! Also my stomach got mad at me partway through, so I missed the entire second kill. No clue how that white boy died!

Sunday: Headed home amidst the looming dread of the forest fire news slowly trickling in and advance warnings of potential evacuations. Really kinda just wanted to stay in Vancouver, honestly! Especially when my plane out of Edmonton had to fucking TURN AROUND AND GO BACK a few minutes into the flight because of mechanical issues, thoroughly wringing out my nerves, already well-frayed with my usual flight anxiety. Made it in the end, though.

Monday: Took it easy! Unpacked, tidied up the disaster I always leave in my bedroom when I travel, read a lot of comics, slept for like fourteen hours straight. Was nice. Music break!

Tuesday: Fire inched closer, about 6000 people ended up having to evacuate by the afternoon, and because people are reactionary jerks, thousands of other people also skipped town, completely blocking the only highway out of town for all the people who actually had to do so. My family is driving me crazy with evacuation plans when we don't even know if we'll end up having to do so. We're on the other side of the highway from those neighbourhoods! Just wait and see, guys!

So yeah, now it's Wednesday again, and I am back at work. There are... very few of us here because of all the aforementioned reactionary jerks (and also a few people who legitimately had to go), but we are still open because capitalism and I'm just keeping an eye on the wildfire updates as they come! Looks like it came about 2km closer to the landfill overnight. Everything smells of barbecue, but the winds and cloud cover are so erratic, the apocalypse sky vibes come and go from hour to hour. It could all very well still just pass us by, and I'm pretty much being paid to sit here and fuck around in Notion on the off chance that somebody needs an oil change in the meantime, so I can't complain too much.

One week ago, I was driving to Edmonton. Take me back.
