Okay, I'm back! Apparently the secret to overcoming my travel curse is to just get it all out of the way early on, because after four fucking hours of flight delays because of the total whiteout conditions that blew in out of nowhere, the rest of my little wrestling jaunt was actually pretty fucking amazing? Downright charmed, if I may? Wednesday was maybe one of the best days of my life? Wild!
I got into Winnipeg late on Tuesday (since my connecting flight also had to be changed), but just in time to get to meet Orange Cassidy, Wheeler Yuta, and Mark Henry at the airport, which was pretty okay I guess! I then managed to get very lost the instant I left said airport while they were waiting for their taxi and staring at me as I wandered back and forth looking for the bus stop, which was less than ideal, but hey, we're making memories here! One sketchy bus ride later, and I was at my extremely reasonably-priced downtown loft, where I curled up and watched old Michelle Yeoh action movies until I passed out. PRETTY GOOD END TO A DAY THAT STARTED OUT PRETTY ROUGH, I WOULD SAY.
The next morning (it is morning until Leshia eats, that is the rule), I got to have a delightful lunch with
intheenditslove before drinking way too much coffee and spending several hours bouncing around the loft until it was time to head out for Dynamite. It was while I was on my way to the dang venue that the news dropped about AEW doing a six-show Canadian tour this summer and I began to wonder if this was just going to be my life now? By the end of the show, I was pretty cool with that maybe being the case!
Because it was amazing? It was amazing. My seat wasn't quite as good as the one I paid way too much for at the Toronto Dynamite because it wasn't as central, but still really goddamn good. I was right in the corner, so the ring post blocked my view of the center of the ring somewhat, but the corner in question was also the corner used by both Hangman/Dark Order and the Elite during their respective trios matches, so being able to count the barbed-wire cuts still all over Hanger's back from Revolution while he waited on the apron was more than a fair tradeoff, I think.
Like, Toronto was so great, and I'm not sure if anything managed to top the way my soul left my body when Orange beat PAC for the All-Atlantic title, but not getting to see my absolute favourites because of Brawl Out was still a bit of a bummer, and screaming Carry On Wayward Son at the top of my lungs along with an entire arena full of people while Kenny and the Bucks came out this time around was probably the closest thing to a religious experience I've ever had, so there (they also played Battle Cry when Kenny came back out after Rampage, so I got the best of both worlds). And that was before years worth of Elite lore started playing out right in front of my stupid fucking face. Afterwards, all the Winnipeg boys (Kenny, Don, Jericho, and Brandon was also there filming stuff for BTE I'm guessing) went around the entire ring, shaking hands and taking pictures and I got to say hi and it was just great. Just great! And I floated back to the loft and mostly failed to sleep because I was so amped up!!
I spent like five hours on Thursday hanging out in the Manitoba Museum, which was very fun and I do still very much just want to live in the little old-timey theatre in the little old-timey town they have, and then I wandered around downtown for a while, getting very cold because I went to fucking Winnipeg in fucking March like a crazy person, and then I had dinner with Leah and Chad at some very tasty little Thai place and then I went home and it was really all just kinda perfect!! Usually the trip home is the worst part of the vacation to me, I don't want to go home and I hate flying and I'm just miserable because I both want it to be over and don't at the same time, but this time around I was just like :)))) the entire trip and it was a total breeze (that one brutal death march through the Calgary airport aside)? The news about Stu Grayson officially re-signing with AEW and not just being a one-off was waiting for me when I landed in Calgary, both flights were so empty that I got to sit by myself AND I got a full can of Diet Coke when they went around with the snack carts because I was the only one who asked for it. Both times!!! I got home at 12:45 in the morning and my brother picked me up at the airport and I still have more than half of my week off work to go!
So, yeah. I believe more short little trips around the country like this are going to be in my future whether I can afford them or not (I cannot), because that fucking ruled and I'm still on top of the fucking world over it, the end. Have an album.
