[127] The quality of hatred

Sitting here, wasting a bit of time before I head to work (yet another late shift, so expect ALL THE TAGS when I get home tonight; I need to save them for the solid three hours I'll inevitably need to kill off once the doctor's offices all close), and wondering when the hell I became a person who is genuinely entertained by Archie Comics? There are only three comics out today that I care enough about to pick up, and Life With Archie is the only one about which I'm aggressively annoyed that I won't be getting immediately because I'm stuck in the ghetto mall. I would seriously buy it digitally in addition to picking up my copy when I get the chance, but they've got this annoying way of only putting up both universes as separate digital releases for the first week, and I draw the line at spending two extra dollars on a BACKUP copy.

(The other two I'm picking up this week are The Walking Dead and X-Treme X-Men, which everyone should also seriously be reading. ACANTI SKYWHALE XAVIER, YOU GUYS.)

But you know, if it was just that, I'd be cool with it, Life With Archie is legit good comics for anyone who enjoys stories, but when I temper my AGGRESSIVE ANNOYANCE by finding a download of last week's issue of the actual normal Archie comic and picking up a digital exclusive? That's when it starts getting weird to me. These are stupid comics for children, and I didn't even like them when I WAS a child. And yet now, when so much about Marvel and DC and shit actively pisses me off (hahaha Avengers Arena, the joke is truly on us), it's nice to just read some fun, goofy shit and get a kick out of it, you know?

On a completely related note, I've been on something of a GLA kick lately.

COMICS SHOULD BE FUN. There is a need for grim and gritty and intense and dramatic, too, of course (see: The Walking Dead, where joy goes to die) but when only a small handful of titles that a massive publisher like Marvel puts out are capable of satisfying the urge to just read something that makes me grin like a loser AND pump my fist when someone does something badass (and one of them is highly likely to be cancelled by issue 12, SKYWHALE XAVIER, COME ON), then it's like no fucking wonder the industry continues to bleed. And then I tell myself if stupid kiddie comics make me happy with their cheesy jokes and adorable life lessons in between of issues of genuinely good stuff like Hawkeye, then what the hell, that's nothing to feel lame about, but it still depresses me when I used to be so all up in Marvel's shit.

But then it's like fuck you, Reggie Mantle just saved Christmas, there is absolutely nothing in this world to be depressed about.

Sidebar: how much am I still LOVING Gisèle Lagacé's art? SO FUCKING MUCH, she is such a great fit for this title, I hope she keeps working for Archie FOREVER, it looks amazing.

Okay, random spiel over, I'm going to enjoy having another couple of hours to myself before I have to leave for work by walking around shirtless and finally watching Pitch Perfect. It is -38 degrees out today. BOOYA.
