CUCUMBER CUCUMBER CUCUMBER CUCUMBER
That was not enough sleep! But it was worth it??? Somehow I finally saw a movie where a good chunk of the audience clapped at the end and it was... Until Dawn???? I was extremely confused, but I'm not here to talk about that one! Here there be spoilers~
GOOD MOVIE. Really good movie! I don't know that I have a ton of Takes on it, but yeah, I dug it a lot. Not sure if it pips Guardians 3 for best film of Phase Five, that'll take time to settle, but they're both solidly up there, with their stories powered by actual themes and whatnot. They made an Avengers movie about depression! What a world!
Has it REINVIGORATED my love for the MCU? Maybe a little, but I'm still not really engaged in whatever broader story they're telling here because they have yet to convince me that they are really engaged in whatever broader story they're telling here, but we got a good-ass movie out of it in the meantime, so I'm happy and definitely have a bit of an urge to revisit older stuff! Maybe I'll do a New Avengers watch of all the things they come from, though I'll probably skip F&WS, I do not want to sit through boat logic again and seeing Zemo might make me sad.
Speaking of that guy, as a fan of the OG Thunderbolts, this was not a good Thunderbolts movie while still managing to capture the... spirit of that team? Morally dubious folks just doing their best because it turns out they actually might want to, what a concept! So glad they didn't just turn them into the Suicide Squad knockoff the trailers were hellbent on making them appear to be. And anyway, that's what the asterisk was for! THAT WAS A LOAD-BEARING ASTERISK, AND I APPRECIATE IT A LOT.
Sure am glad that Doomsday cast reveal just told us off the bat everyone but Olga Kurylenko would be back! That might have been a really shocking moment and led to tension over everyone's fates otherwise! Phew! The big brother of the music credits basically telling us what the post-credits scene was about to entail, I suppose (it's definitely RDJ in there, right?).
Sure am glad (for real this time) to welcome the Sentry into the list of comic characters I can't stand rehabbed by these movies, though, I had high hopes and he did not disappoint! Why is nobody talking about that weird beat where Valentina mentions his dad and he says something about how he didn't say she could know that, though?? Definitely feels like they're leaving the door open for weird 'actually he was in the Fantastic Four somehow' bullshit memory shenanigans in the future if they want to play with that (hopefully done better than in the comics, lol the sentry sucks so fuckin' much y'all). LOVE U, BOBBY
Walker is... on the cusp of making the list. I'd put him on the level that Carol was, pre-Marvels, where he might win me fully over yet, and in the meantime, I really enjoyed him in this particular context on the team. Just a total shitbird doing his best (which is bad, because he sucks, but here we are, it's great). Ghost and USAgent looting Taskmaster's body like D&D murder hobos, SO GOOD.
You know what else I didn't particularly care for in the comics when they first turned up? The New Avengers! Fantastic twist on the concept here, taking 'A-list heroes on a B-list team' and just... swapping those letters around to see what happens. I want to see what happens! I'm skeptical that Doomsday will satisfy me in that regard! PROVE ME WRONG, MARVEL. PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG. I YEARN TO CARE LONG-TERM AGAIN. In the meantime, First Steps looks awesome and I'm very much looking forward to it, so I guess we'll go from there!!
