Summer 2022 - Week 7

A chilly, foggy summer day, out of nowhere, just what I wanted. Time for another frivolous shit update, because life goes on and I am desperately trying not to think about all the foods I could be eating.

FILMS

Bullet Train (2022): Leitch out there really carving out a nice niche for himself as the 'fun and shiny and shallow' action guy, huh? There are worse things to be, this was a great time. Gonna cry about Tangerine and Lemon forever, though!

DC League of Super Pets (2022): Look, it wasn't good, but we went to see it immediately after receiving a cancer diagnosis, and pretty much anything's gotta be an improvement over that. Why was there a squirrel in the pet shop???

Prey (2022): Rad as hell. I want a sequel, but I want more franchise pictures to really get wild while staying true to the source LIKE this even more. Maybe I'll watch the Comanche dub later. Leshia's Pick of the Week!

SHORTS

Tord och Tord (2010): Rewatched the strange little animal short because I loved it. First it was even more depressing, and then I tried to find the story it was based on but could locate nothing about it on the English internet beyond a reference to it being written by a friend of the filmmaker, about the early onset of schizophrenia, and then it was EVEN MORE EVEN MORE DEPRESSING. Tord. :(

TELEVISION

Better Call Saul 6x12: The way Jimmy and Kim's reactions to the guilt of what they did launched them in perfectly opposed directions that still end up in the same place in the end. He covered himself in colours and callousness, masking all of his pain in the gaudy protective carapace that was Saul, while she stripped herself of all personality, all colour, all character, just numbed herself into nothing, unwilling even to choose a goddam flavour of ice cream that she likes. But she's still Kim, and he's still Jimmy, so the instant the option of doing the right thing is actually presented, spoken out loud into reality, she just fuckin' does it. She's the one person in this entire franchise that never bought into the idea of being too far gone. Jimmy, on the other hand, Saul layers worn thin by just a few months of Gene living out the same sort of hell Kim threw herself headlong into, needs to go full reckless young bastard to trip himself into getting caught against every single 'maybe I will strangle this sweet old lady actually??' survival instinct he has, but their end goals remain the same even now!!! Less than a week until my favourite show ends forever! Shit!

Fuller House 5x02: Is simply holding up a pair of crocs really an obvious indicator of 'we're going to a cooking class'? How the FUCK was transporting an entire renn faire to the backyard for the horrible middle child an option when Stephanie was too busy to just take him??? HOW IS THAT LESS WORK????? Who sits on a BAG of warm laundry? Why does this show always make me feel like I'm having a twenty-minute stroke?

GLOW 3x09: They really busted out nearly-naked showgirl Geena Davis in the second-to-last episode ever??? HOW DID THEY CANCEL THIS SHOW (covid, the answer is always fucking covid).

Harley Quinn 1x01-1x07: Took me a couple of episodes to really start feeling it; the pilot in particular felt very 'ooooh, look how edgy and R-rated we are, we can say the F-word sooooo many times', but it finds its feet pretty quickly after that. Really good shit, hope it doesn't get cancelled while I'm finally checking it out!

The Life of John Wayne Murdoch: The psychology of death match wrestlers, man, there's nothing like it. Seeing this man's horrible scars and the tiny little 'hotdog and a handshake' crowds he gets them performing in front of before going home to gently bathe his guinea pigs is just... wow. What a life.

The Life of Suge D: FEEDING PIGGIES IN THE BAHAMAS.

The Life of Unseen: Yesssss, extra clips of all the babies, especially Megan Bayne's amazing cousin. Not enough #taigastyle, though.

The Life of Willow Nightingale: Getting to see the actual human side of the human manifestation of concentrated sunshine! Hell yes! Two things that really stuck out: all the stuff with her mom being unable to watch her wrestle ever since the night she broke her neck, oof, and the fact that it seems to be a running trend in the episodes featuring black wrestlers (Trish, Suge, now Willow) for them to be more hung up on their careers stalling, about whether their big break will ever come or if they can actually take advantage of the right opportunities when they come along... idk, seems bad!

The Life of ?: This level of meta parody is still slightly over my new-to-wrestling head, and I wish to know who this man actually is, but the berating people from his merch table got a lot of laughs out of me.

Marvel Studios: Assembled 1x03: Oh, they stepped it the fuck UP with this episode; the WandaVision and Falcon/Winter Soldier specials felt like glorified DVD extras (which, to be clear, were and continue to be awesome) but this is, like, a proper documentary! With fancy Hiddles voiceover and clock graphics and shit! So good! Loki/Sylvie still icks me out, though. SEASON TWO WHEN??????

Queer Eye Germany 1x04: HOLY SHIT, THEY FOUND THE GIRL WITH THE MOST DEPRESSING LIFE IN ALL OF GERMANY and I once again find myself very pleased by how low-key a lot of the approaches here are? Like, obviously this one's gonna be a tear-jerker no matter how you slice it, but you just know Karamo would have made some big healing moment out of her tragedy and survivor's guilt over her ENTIRE DEAD FAMILY or something, but instead we just get Leni being like 'hmmm, wanna go to the boardwalk and hang out and just be a normal kid for a bit?' and that's it! It's so sweet!

Star Trek: Enterprise 1x04: Aww, Kellie Waymire; has any bit part actor dead for almost twenty years now inexplicably stuck in my brain as much as her? Anyway, VERY bold of them to title an episode Strange New World, it's like they WANT me to go back and just watch that show again instead.

Westworld 4x07: This season feels like ten episodes of plot tightened up into eight; it doesn't feel SUPER rushed or anything, but there are SO many big beats that could be expanded on SO much more than they are? Even aside from all the purposely-vague worldbuilding, like, Frankie finally finds her dad again after all these years except he is definitely a host now and there is no time to deal with ALL THAT, everybody is killing each other in the robopocalypse, SORRY. Anyway, Bernard implying that Stubbs was gonna die so that he would willingly go off and leave Bernard unprotected broke my heart, bring on the finale and please don't cancel this before it gets to actually wrap shit up, WB!
