Spring 2022 - Week 13
The sun is out, the lilac bush is blooming, and I'm fully rested with all my bullshit ailments of the past week healed up and behind me. It's a bonus AEW PPV week! THEY INSTALLED A SOFT SERVE MACHINE IN THE BREAK ROOM AT WORK. There's a lot I could probably bitch about, but why? It's good to be alive!! Week off Leshia is back!!!
Will probably update again later, for now I'm just lazing about until I have to get dressed to go to the movies tonight and loving it~
FILMS
The Beaver Trilogy (2000): Going to have to sit with this one and revisit it at some point, because I think it might be brilliant? None of the three parts really work as much of anything on their own, but somehow, all together, they become revelatory? Maybe??? Sean Penn doesn't hold a candle to Gary in terms of sheer weird charisma or performance energy, but without him, you don't have the context needed to step over to Crispin's portrayal, which is even further removed from the real man, but perfect in his own way, so his triumph in accepting himself at the end feels like a triumph for all of them, even if I never even got the impression that Gary was necessarily anything but a cis man who likes to dress up? Everything is drag, and it's beautiful. Or maybe it's all just a filmmaker fucking around over the years and means nothing! I'm genuinely unsure! ***LESHIA'S PICK OF THE WEEK***
The Flying Ace (1926): Really wasn't expecting this to be a detective movie more than anything else, but the final reel pulls out the fun action stops to make it worth it. Also, hiring actual disabled actors is how you get cool shit like a one-legged guy chasing dudes down on a bike using a rifle to aggressively pedal, which was some of the most metal shit I've seen.
Les vampires (1915/16): I wasn't really sure what section to put this in! As a serial, it's generally counted as a single, seven-hour movie, but that also means it's technically just ten shorts, but also, watching it over the course of ten days, I couldn't help but be struck by the realization that it plays out EXACTLY like a modern season of prestige streaming television (short season, one main story told episodically, episodes of no set length but mostly a little under an hour), even though it predates the existence of TV by decades. Which made me start thinking about what television even IS anymore, not so much because of the switch to streaming in and of itself, but how it's modified the format so much. Is Moon Knight television just because it's broken into episodes and wasn't in theatres, or does the lack of ongoing production make it a serial film like Les vampires? Have we just gone back to a hundred-year-old format being viable again and forgot the terms to describe it? ANYWAY, THIS IS A REALLY GOOD FUCKING MOVIE, it's a total bonkers roller coaster ride from start to finish, quickly became appointment viewing for me, and Alucard ain't got SHIT on Irma Vep.
SHORTS
The Hours and Times (1991): This thing really got under my skin at some point since I first saw it, damn. I think my favourite part is how the 'we'll meet again in ten years' bit could be some bit of mawkish sentimentality that they dwell on, but they just move on, instead. If you know that Epstein doesn't have ten more years to live, then you know, otherwise it's just another moment. Probably my favourite RPF slash movie.
Janine (1990): Happy pride month, fuck Janine and her bitch mom to the moon and back!
TELEVISION
Fuller House 5x01: Well, fuck. Here I was, finally ready to climb back onto this garbage horse for one last trot, only to get immediately bucked the fuck off by Sagat feels. I COMPLETELY forgot that that was gonna be a thing I had to be ready for, and then he walked through the door and punched me in the face and then there's all this heartfelt bullshit about Danny getting to hold his first granddaughter and how Stephanie will still always need him and just. Dang. Dang, Bob!!
GLOW 3x02: Bless Bash and his stupid, stupid heart. It's pretty weird going back to this show now that I know Tammé as an actual wrestler!
Grace and Frankie 6x02: That 'Sol learns to swim' subplot is insanely sweet.
Ms. Marvel 1x02: Still cute! Still... not very well written? idk it's just not clicking for me. Also don't love Damage Control getting turned into another generic 'FBI but for superheroes' organization.
Orange is the New Black 7x02: Can't believe how abruptly they killed off Daddy, but maybe that's just because it's been so long since I've watched.
Queer Eye: We're in Japan! 1x02: Kan is the cutest thing alive and must be protected at all costs. ALL COSTS.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 1x07: How dare this show make me so invested in Spock/T'Pring, knowing how it ends. This show definitely seems to be getting hornier the further along it gets, good stuff. And Angel absolutely rules, looking forward to seeing her again at some point (also had no idea the actress was trans until looking her up just now to make sure Angel wasn't spelled some weird Star Trek way, neat).
