Spring Season: Week 83

Another subscription for the pile! Landmark finally instituted their loyalty program, ten bucks a month that more than pays for itself as long as you go to the movies at least once a month, which I already have, so! A free ticket every month, 20% discount on other tickets and concessions, plus points that rack up shockingly quickly (I already almost have enough for a free ticket after going to see one movie), they'd better not nerf this. WE'RE IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC, REWARD MY LOYALTY. They were also checking vaccine cards at the door, which was nice, and made me feel much better about going amidst our steadily rising numbers (only steadily, though, and wow what a difference from our delta-free horror spike of a third wave that makes for, eat shit anti-vaxxers).

FILMS

Aparisyon (2012): A huge level up from Sandoval's flawed yet satisfying debut. I'm sure all of the broader cultural significance behind the setting and specific time period elude me, but as a study of religion and trauma and grief and forgiveness and guilt, it handles a whole lot really delicately. Beautiful, heartbreaking stuff.

Tre donne - L'automobile (1971): See, this is why I don't drive. So much hassle. What a brutal downer of an ending!!

The 'Human' Factor (1975): Everyone in this movie has an IQ of approximately 75. VERY bad, but... strangely compelling?

The Man Who Would Be King (1975): This is just The Road to El Dorado with even more cartoonish leads despite it not being a cartoon.

Momma's Man (2008): Oh, I truly hate how much of a mood this is. Really did NOT need to be a feature film, though, it got its point across within the first half hour and then just. Kept on happening for a real long time.

Moonstruck (1987): It's Cher at the height of her powers and Cage just coming into his, what more can you ask for? Love a good infidelity-based romance.

Venom (2018): Pre-gamed because my brother really wanted to see the new one. Such a great example of a movie that is weirdly entertaining in spite of itself. Sony just out there keeping the early '00s superhero movie alive.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021): But seriously. Words cannot accurately describe how much I do not want this shit anywhere NEAR the MCU. It was perfect and terrible and I loved it and it's hideous and everyone involved deserves Oscars, though.

West Side Story (1961): Why do you kids live like there's a war on? :(

SHORTS

Affirmations (1990): Stand up and love.

Thành Phố Khác (2016): I'm sure there was a point to all that, but it did not hold my attention enough to find it.

I Shall Not Be Removed: The Life of Marlon Riggs (1996): Since I watched the man's entire filmography last month, might as well end with something on the man himself. Though, honestly, I think his work did that even better than this. Still glad I found him.

Jeanne d'Arc (1900): With a more involved 2016 score this time around. That military parade scene do go on forever.

Sur la route du paradis (2011): Sad and spare, an extremely effective sympathy machine. Ends awfully abruptly, thought I suspect that's partially the point; I still would have loved to see this spun out into something longer and more fleshed in.

TELEVISION

Queer Eye 5x01-5x07: I am gonna need every season going forward to have weird themes for the little transition photoshoots, like whatever insane American Revolution nonsense they've got going on here. Just delightful.

Rhodes to the Top 1x01/1x02: Yes, I watched it. No, I'm not proud.

Riverdale 5x18: Oh man, that was rough. I think my main issue with the increasing musical-ization of this show is that it just feels so fucking calculated for maximum online engagement and nothing else at this point; people really liked the first musical episode (because it ruled) so lets just go back to that well FUCKING CONSTANTLY, even if we never have a good reason to again. Everything about this was just. So forced, but hey, at least Toni and Fangs hooked up, that was nice. I've sure everyone on the internet hates it because being bisexual is just supposed to be gay with an asterisk, though.

Star Trek: Lower Decks 2x08 Needed more of Boimler and the Borg babies.

What If...? 1x08: AND BACK INTO THE DEPRESSION MINES WE GO. Everything about Hawkeye and Widow in the Ultronpocalypse was just so damn cool, though!! And Jeffrey Wright has been such a great addition to the MCU, goddamn. TEAM-UP TIME.

The VENOM movies are SO weird and fun, IDGAF. I don't think I saw the first one in theatres, BUT I SAW THE SECOND IN FRENCH ON OPENING DAY, #noregrets.
