Spring Season: Week 82
I kept forgetting to delace my old boots so I can get those sweet, sweet lazy laceup magnets for the shoes I've been wearing at work, so this morning I just threw them in a plastic bag and took them with me so I could do it here. Finally, I am free of the five-day tyranny of having to tie my shoes! And my old, threadbare, hole-ridden boots are in the trash. I am accomplished, time to fuck off for the day!
I kid, I kid, it is Monday, I will probably do... some work. If only so that I'm not all rushed to clean house tomorrow.
FILMS
Anatomy of a Murder (1959): *jimmy stewart voice* panties
Black Is... Black Ain't (1994): A little disjointed feeling for something so concerned with intersectionality, but maybe that's the way it should be, unfinished as Riggs had to leave it.
Viejo calavera (2016): Something about the sound in this just fucks SO hard. Rich and immersive, unpleasant in places but always in a thoroughly compelling way, just beautiful, a real treat for the ears. The actual movie it's in service of is a whole lot of meandering whatever, but damn, I kinda wanna watch it again with headphones.
Oxhide II (2009): At least I could see what the fuck was happening in this one. It was still deeply fucking boring, but in more of a... hangout way. I don't think I can adequately review my thoughts on this without getting real deep into the weeds of how little I relate to 'food is the lifeblood of relationships and family and culture' narratives (and my relationships with food in general once you get there) as well as my issues with slow living vs. instant gratification and scraping along around the poverty line, like... this is just a movie of a family making a lovely meal together and it just seems like such a thoroughly MISERABLE existence to me (entirely aside from the claustrophobic living space and struggles with work/money), and that's probably much more of a me thing than an Oxhide thing and I don't really want to unpack it all! Maybe this movie is Good, actually.
Scarface (1932): "Uh oh, we made all this murder based on real life monsters way too fun and cool, what should we do?" "I dunno, throw up some elaborate title cards calling for the cops to do something about it like we're better than it all? Who gives a shit." "What about the weird, pseudo-incestuous brother/sister relationship, should we do something about that?" "Absolutely not." This movie fucking rules, and Ann Dvorak deserves the world.
Thelma & Louise (1991): I don't think I've ever seen this movie outside of a 4:3 aspect ratio before?? Anyway, thirty years on and everyone is still talking about hot young Brad Pitt when Michael Madsen is RIGHT THERE, literally the next room over, the absolute fools.
Twentieth Century (1934): Ah, the glorification of abusive assholes in positions of power for the sake of their art, what a laugh riot!
SHORTS
Anthem (1991): I'm not entirely sure I got whatever it was trying to impart on me, but an enjoyable watch nonetheless.
Ethnic Notions (1986): It's all imagery I'm very familiar with, but just the sheer unending onslaught of it all... oof. It's a rough watch. Important, but rough.
In Nomine Patris (2019): Well, at least it's short.
TELEVISION
Riverdale 5x17: lol what the fuck is even happening here anymore
Star Trek: Lower Decks 2x07 Similar to the unexplained Shaxs resurrection earlier in the season, 'Billups is actually the virgin prince of a fantasy-themed planet who gave up the throne to be a Starfleet engineer' is such a funny 'the protagonists of the show are not actually the protagonists of the ship' beat and I love it.
The Twilight Zone 2x08-2x10: I am sad this got cancelled! Farewell, zaddy Peele, it's been fun. I legit think the Groundhog Day riff was my favourite episode of the lot, even if I think it meant for me to see Topher Grace as more of a terrifying villain than I did? I guess because they're both in their own little horror movies, and we were seeing hers specifically this time around? It all rang so true though, like, no, being stuck in that situation is absolutely the sort of thing that would fuck a regular person up in exactly those sorts of messed up, solipsistic ways, and I found both characters to be entirely sympathetic throughout. Also, I am counting this season as an entry for Sixty Spooks (#9!) if only for the episode where I had to watch an octopus sucker out a man's eyeball.
What If...? 1x07: WELL THAT'S ONE WAY TO PULL OUT OF THE DARKNESS SPIRAL, LOL. Just full ridiculous cartoon AU, I can dig it as a change of pace, if nothing else. TIME TO START ASSEMBLING SOME EXILES, I GUESS.
