Spring Season: Week 78
Monday, Monday, Monday! I'm in the home stretch! Freedom and a jam-packed weekend of fun is so close I can taste it!
This week actually went by REALLY weirdly quickly, maybe I'm just happier when I have less work to do? Or maybe I just had way too much on my plate before and it was stressing me out and work is less of an exhausting slog when my sleep-deprived ass isn't constantly scrambling to finish way more shit than I have time to finish? WHO CAN SAY. I do need to work out a proper new day-to-day work flow instead of just derping around, though. Next shift maybe! Or maybe I'll just slip into a coma every other week, the world is my erster!
I watched NO movies over an hour long this week! The hell!
SHORTS
Behind the Screen (1916): Let's not talk about how it took thirty plus years for me to realize that 'prop' is short for 'property', okay? Okay.
Chaplin's Goliath (1996): So remember how I said I cried for like half an hour straight over just finding out about the life of a random actor via wikipedia the other week? Well this was a whole-ass documentary about him, so I'm sure you can guess how well that went for me.
Dementia (1955): I started out a little worried, since it opens with a fawning text crawl from Preston Sturges and I have very little patience for HIS (italicized) shit, but this was a'ight. Not nearly as unconventional and thought-provoking as it seems to think it is, but a'ight.
Easy Street (1917): You could tell me that cops are still trained this way, and I would believe it. Usually the tramp falls somewhere between 'sociopath' and 'delightful chaos gremlin' on whatever spectrum that is, but he's actually really adorable and endearing in this one?
Le Voyage dans la Lune (1902): After watching a handful of Méliès this month, I feel like pretty much all of his shorts deserve to be as iconic as this one, which rules but is not really much of an outlier? All of this shit is so good and cool and magical!
The Vagabond (1916): More zany bar fights and surprisingly touching romances, fewer horrific ethnic caricatures, please! Seriously, it's so cute how into Chaplin that Purviance is for a change, there's no real heavy-handed pursuit, just two people who vibe with each other~
La Fée Carabosse ou le poignard fatal (1906): The number of times per minute this made me shout HOLY SHIT, wow. Absolutely wild.
TELEVISION
Riverdale 5x13: Is it just me, or was Betty's Coyote Ugly scheme just the dumbest? WHAT WERE THE ODDS THAT WOULD POSSIBLY WORK?? Of course it's just me, nobody is still ridiculous enough to still be watching this show. Whatever, it ended in a big amazing Texas Chainsaw Massacre homage and I kinda loved how everyone had all their own disparate stories going on, but then they all just acknowledged that they were putting their own shit on hold to go do Betty's dumb thing without question, so there IS a sense of logic underpinning things that has been absent for a while. The increase in random musical numbers is getting rough, though. Love Veronica and Reggie just randomly being investment bankers now. Kevin Keller Don't Immediately Join a Terrifying Church for Once Challenge! I don't think he can do it! Also HI MOOSE
Star Trek: Lower Decks 2x03 Shaxs suddenly being alive again and nobody knowing why is EXACTLY the sort of thing I wanted out of this show when it was first announced, just all this crazy shit happening to the bridge crew while everyone else just gets to see these little snippets of it all, it's so good and funny and I hope they lean into sticking to that point of view more often. Also I love everything this show is doing with Orions.
The Twilight Zone 1x08-1x10: Damn, they really backloaded this first season, huh? The last three episodes were far and away the best of the bunch. The Ginnifer Goodwin one suffers from the same 'IT'S ABOUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, GET IT? GET IT? DO YOU GET IT? ARE YOU SURE?' situation that much of the season did, but is weird and creepy enough to make it work. Chris O'Dowd getting a weirdly happy ending in his little gun story was unexpected but welcome (fuck them kids). And saving the weird meta story for last was very effective, it really fucked me up when Peele suddenly broke character, now let us never speak of the terrible CGI Rod Serling again ha ha what the fuck was that
What If...? 1x03: It's not a proper What If series if characters aren't dying all over the place, what a good episode. Mark Ruffalo and Liv Tyler remain destined to never play those characters opposite each other. The level of humour felt a little inappropriate given the subject matter? Usually the balance is a little better than 'ha ha Thor's rotting corpse smells like lavender', maybe it being a cartoon affects things? HULK FUCKING EXPLODED JFC. Very fun episode. Very fun show.

i just wish cheryl would stop singing, like
