Spring Season: Week 74
Dental odyssey #2 complete. I had pictures taken of my premium mouth bones, and I am booked in for a root canal (my third, for those keeping count at home) on my next week off. I will also be needing a significant filling (that may turn out to be a root canal once they get in there) and two partial crowns, so even with insurance, it'll be... quite pricey. I'm so tired.
Feeling like I need to kick into frantic last-minute house cleaning mode before I run out of time, but it just doesn't seem to be happening. Having terrible binge eating issues at the moment, but I'm not really sure how to talk about that in a way that isn't dumb and needlessly triggery. It's real bad, that's all I've got.
One day off to go. At least the weather today was beautiful as I roamed about downtown. Okay, more movies.
FILMS
The Balcony (1963): So horny that it loops back around and becomes the opposite. Not puritanical or anything, just... anti-horny. I have nothing but respect for a sub-ninety minute film that nevertheless starts with an overture and ends with naked Peter Falk and Leonard Nimoy.
The Blue Angel (1930): Felt like watching the English version, it's definitely not as good as the original since everyone's wrestling with the dialogue, but it still got me good in the end, and having two versions of those musical numbers is a trip.
Jungle Cruise (2021): The African Queen it ain't, but somewhere in the bloated runtime and constant assault of terrible, unnecessary CGI, there was fun to be had. The Rock's character is an instant bicon for the ages.
Kitty (1945): What if Pygmalion, but even meaner somehow? That sounds like a dig, but this was actually quite funny.
On Dangerous Ground (1951): I completely forgot I had even seen this until Ida Lupino showed up? She just wipes out my memories of the entire first half of this movie the instant she appears, it's wild. A blind woman who lives alone and has flawless eyeliner is still RIDICULOUS, though.
Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (2021): Very dumb and bad and Henry Golding is very handsome, 10/10. Maybe if I gave a shit about G.I. Joe, I would be mad about them butchering the character or some such thing, but I don't so I didn't!
Sun Don't Shine (2012): Was this actually good, or just quiet and dreamy? I find myself asking that a lot these days. Possibly too much.
Welcome Home, Soldier Boys (1972): Goes along in a very measured progression from yuck to YUCK to YIIIIIIKES and beyond. It does not escalate quickly, but boy does it escalate!
SHORTS
Notting Hill Carnival, 83-86 (1986): Can't tell if this is a great time or just a bad trip. Either way, I want to go so bad.
Les Aventures de Robinson Crusoé (1902): Every time he interacted between the layers of the 2D backdrops, it blew my little mind. Shame about all the racism. Friday's bright pink pants were a CHOICE.
Les illusions fantaisistes (1909): Magical as fuck what the hell!! How was this so delightful! I'm just smiling away over here! Méliès, my guy! Fuck it, it's five minutes long and over 110 years old, but I'm calling this Leshia's Pick of the Week!!! It has a skeleton!
TELEVISION
Cloak & Dagger 2x08-2x10: Perfect babies, now and forever. This series was such a trip, man, I love the way it posits itself as one of the grounded, street-level Marvel shows, but then by the end it's all about voodoo and most of the action is taking place in metaphysical record shops and the main villain is a jazz man ascending to godhood. I love how they didn't even TRY to make the Brigid/Mayhem split into anything other than ridiculous comic book science, it's so much fun. Ty and Tandy, my flawless children, both fucked up but doing their best, I will forever be grateful we got this much of them, at least.
Rick and Morty 5x07: I wish the compound weasel voltrons had gotten more elaborate designs as they went up through the levels, but that's a pretty minor nitpick.
