Spring Season: Week 73

So I went to the dentist, confirmed an infection, got a prescription for some antibiotics, and I have another appointment tomorrow morning for in-depth x-rays, since they're not sure which tooth the infection is in. One of the options won't be so bad, the other option would be... bad, so fingers crossed!

Have been kinda avoiding DW and the internet outside of my phone in general, but I'm trying to get back to all the things I left hanging today, I just get so fucking anxious about everything to do with my mouth, I hate it and it makes me want to give up on everything I enjoy. Have even been taking it easier than usual on movies, too, in favour of just kinda lounging around and letting my extremely short attention span take me where it will. It leads to me feeling completely unaccomplished, but also makes the days off feel longer, stretching out in front of and behind me like weekends used to when I was a kid. It's... nice.

Got caught in the rain a couple of times, there's been a lot of it. Crashed my grandmother's culture club meeting while I was waiting for my prescription. Tried that new Nashville burger at BK. Watched some Olympics.

It's really neat to have a theater full of new movies that I've seen again. Keeping a close eye on our numbers, I'll be so pissed if people are dumb enough AGAIN that that'll have to stop again. Gonna split the Spoiler Zone up across a few entries instead of trying to play catch-up, I think. More tomorrow, along with tags. And x-rays and hopefully a plan of tooth damage attack, ugh.

FILMS

Der blaue Engel (1930): Hey, what the hell is it about Emil Jannings' big stupid sad sack Nazi face that makes me cry like a loser every damn time? He always plays a dick who deserves his comeuppance, but there I am, blubbering away every time it happens regardless!

Célébration (2007): I think I needed a bit more of a throughline, just any sort of actual narrative to keep me interested, but it's an easy thing to get a little bit lost in. A celebration, but a sad one.

Cowboy (1958): God, this movie's even gayer than I remembered, I love it.

The Forbidden Room (2015): Sexy skeleton ladies, poisoned leotards, banana monster ex-boyfriends, oxygen-rich flapjacks, love and lust and murder and submarines. Dream, moustache, dream. Gosh, Maddin loves amnesia. And so do I. NEED to see this one again, it perfectly brought back the feeling I got when I first caught The Saddest Music in the World on TV in high school and instantly knew it was a thing I was going to love. ~Leshia's Pick of the Week~

Lilith (1964): At first it seems like it's going to be one from the 'staring and lurching' school of mental illness dramas, but quickly becomes something MUCH more upsetting. This thing is dark as hell, but has such a light touch about it, that it just kinda gently washes over you for the duration, so you don't even notice you're drowning in it until it's all WAY above your head. Might have been better with a stronger performance than Beatty could put in, but there's plenty of appeal as-is.

The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit (1956): Pretty good, but waaaaaay too long to be as interesting as it deserved to be. The subplot with the boss being sad about being a workaholic felt completely extraneous, ditto the house/inheritance drama. I'm guessing it all worked better in the book, but this felt decidedly bloated.

Old (2021): I wonder if he made a movie about a beach that makes you old because he can't write kids to save his life. They are just. SO bad. This movie? Isn't!

Phantom Love (2007): Put it on and immediately thought 'oh, it's another one of these movies'. I'm sure there was a point to all that, I just don't care enough to try figuring out what. How dare people compare Nina Menkes to David Lynch.

Pressure (1976): There's so much going on here, and I feel so unequipped to unpack any of it. Fantastic.

Queen of Diamonds (1991): Still no clue what the point of all that was, but at least it sure was pretty.

Un homme qui crie (2010): The power of a father's love, and its limits when exposed to the realities of the world around him. Painfully human.

Une saison en France (2017): Gives you just enough hope to hang yourself. Brutal.

Solomon Northup's Odyssey (1984): There's a gravitas here, a certain care in the approach that's just as effective as the stark brutality of the 2013 film, just in a very different way. The performances really shine through the TV movie trappings, too, Avery Brooks is so good, man.

Wolf (1994): Ridiculous and hilarious when it's definitely not trying to be, I love this shit. Gimme the sequel from Spader's point of view. Gimme the Pfeiffer spin-off where she doesn't have to fuck an old man for once. Send me into the Wolfverse.

SHORTS

Afroprojection #1: The Sweet Atmosphere Phased at 120° and West Blank! When the Universe Collapsed (2018): The soundscapes are pretty wild if you can ignore the part where they're paired with an hour's worth of terrible flash animation. Like, this thing is GARBAGE garbage.

Commuters (1970): Different worlds, all just spinning in tandem with each other, never touching. Not sure if this is good, or just boring enough to make your mind wander and draw all kinds of deep connections.

The Great Sadness of Zahora (1983): Great sadness? Check. Great acting? Absent.

Pressure (2006): Almost made me nostalgic for just shooting the shit in the school library as a teen, and then Lena Dunham jerked off her nose. :(

Rabbit's Moon (1971): I finally found the full 16-minute version with the original soundtrack! I've been searching for MONTHS!

TELEVISION

Cloak & Dagger 2x01-2x07: Operation 'catch up on all the Marvel shows I dipped on because I got depressed when they all got cancelled at once' has begun with my two perfect babies! I adore them and they deserved so much better!

Rick and Morty 5x06: Happy Thanksgiving, I guess! NOW the Halloween season can truly begin!
