Spring Season: Week 5

Starting to kinda feel... left out of the stress? I mean, don't get me wrong, I don't WANT to be freaking out over all of this, but I also don't want to be the 'jfc can you guys just chill out a bit' person in the corner, either. This is freaky shit! We're all doing what we can! I just feel like I'm looking at it all through a pane of glass (OR A BUBBLE (i love my work bubble)) while my friends are melting down and it doesn't... feel good? Maybe it's just because of how isolated we are up here, idk. It's definitely not that bad here yet, compared to other places. But I'm listening to all the terrifying coronavirus daily podcasts and keeping up with the numbers on Twitter and constantly washing my hands and shit, shouldn't I be more scared? But eh. Whatever, ANOTHER WEEK DOWN.

It got warm again! Immediately after dumping several feet of snow on us! Oh god it's so wet now send help!

Mom joined some Facebook group of her old high school class and keeps sending me pictures from her Grade 9 Graduation and shit, it's super cute.

The hospital is going on full lockdown, which is good, but also sad, because I want to see my grandmother. Thinking about Mémère and all those horrible outbreaks in care centers around Alberta is the closest I come to getting scared about all of this, so hopefully things stay nice and secure up there. But they're letting the residents smoke on the balcony now, so she's happy, PRIORITIES.

My priority remains watching movies, mostly:

Avengers: Infinity War (2018): GOD, THAT ENDING STILL FUCKING HITS SO HARD. And it's still so insane to me that they made this monstrosity of a film work. Literally the entire first hour is just introducing characters. This must be absolute nonsense so people who go in blind. Worth noting that this is the first film since The Avengers that really made me step back and go 'holy shit, they really did it' in terms of bringing the feeling of a unified comic universe to the movies. It's when they first cut to the Guardians out in space. Goddamn chills. FUN FACT: This movie came out less than two years ago. What the fuck.

Delicatessen (1991): Okay but seriously what the fuck was that. I... think I liked it? Possibly a lot? I think I need to watch more Jeunet to be sure.

Diva (1981): More interested in being striking than interesting, but it mostly succeeds, so I can't complain too much. Everything to do with Alba made me HORRIBLY uncomfortable, though, and it wasn't helped by the fact that I can't seem to find the actress's age anywhere online! Like, she PROBABLY wasn't underage? But she still looked and acted like a fucking child. As far as 'caught on tape' crime dramas go, I think I liked Blow Out better.

Near Dark (1987): You guys, I just miss Bill Paxton so damn much. :(

Le meraviglie (2014): Kinda baffling? I had a real hard time finding normal human reactions in any of these people for the first half hour or so, but then I think I settled into the vibe. Nicely melancholic in places.

No Place Like Home (2006): There was some neat stuff here, great soundtrack, liked the ending, but mostly I was just bored, womp womp. Most interesting part was 'AND INTRODUCING GRACE JONES' like hahaha holy shit, I think she might be going places (this was filmed in the '70s, not 2000s).

The Harder They Come (1972): Oh man, so this guy only ever made two movies, and I am SO glad I watched No Place Like Home first, because I would have been super disappointed by it if I'd watched it after this, which I REALLY liked! Maybe I have to be in the right mood and will give it another shot someday. Anyway, this ruled; killer soundtrack, killer mood, killer ending. Jimmy Cliff is so good! What the fuck!

Crank (2006): ahahahaha fuck you leave me alone

Crank: High Voltage (2009): aaaaaaaaaaahahahahaha these movies are perfection

Rabioso sol, rabioso cielo (2009): OOF. This shit was over three hours long and most of it was black and white, wordless sex scenes. They put up a title card two hours in, and then it's some kind of confusing resurrection/past lives/telepathy story? Thank christ I watched both Crank movies beforehand or I think I would be dead of arthouse pretension overdose.

Corpo celeste (2011): This was by the same chick who did Le meraviglie, and I think I might just not have the proper frames of Italian reference to get her movies? This was a nice little coming of age story seen through uncomfortable religious lenses, good performances, but I was more confused than I was connecting with it more often than not.

Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018): Ah, the post-Infinity War palette cleanser, just as refreshing as ever. I don't think I've ever noticed before that the lab seems to be powered by giant Duracells? God, this is just so FUN. Good old-fashioned superheroics, because not everything has to be end of the world stakes all of the time. Also, I'm going to need more Scott/Jan interactions in the future, because not only does this movie start with them psychically connected, after Endgame they've got 'missed out on years of my daughter's life' in common. I can't believe it's looking like Peyton Reed is going to be the first director to actually do a full trilogy in the MCU??

My food delivery guy was super into following social distancing procedures ("Okay, I'll leave it by the door, you open the door, take your food, then I'll get my bag once the door is closed"), which was nice to see AND they gave me free guac, so. Things are looking up!
