Spring Season: Weeks 1-2

Kinda... kinda regretting not updating last week given how quickly ALL THAT escalated. Still, it's not really affecting me yet aside from my brother being home from school (and it already felt like he was home all the time anyway with how much more time off KIDS TODAY get than when I was that age) and a couple of things closed; for the most part it's still business as usual up here.

It kinda feels like I'm getting the internet from a strange, parallel universe, where it's nothing but people talking about their ongoing quarantines and screaming at everyone else to stay home, with none of it translating to my actual day-to-day life at all. I'm updating from work as usual, the only difference being a whole lot of hand sanitizer and bottles of Spray Nine strewn about the place like that's going to stop this thing when it starts to spread. My job involves handling people's car keys all day, come on now.

Apparently our health zone finally clocked its first case yesterday, but whether that means it's made it all the way up here or is still down in Cold Lake or Grande Prairie is anyone's guess.

I definitely don't LIKE the fact that we're not shutting everything down before it's too late (because it will almost certainly get to that point, and quickly, right?), but I'm not really panicking any. Maybe I'm just not equipped to deal with TWO once-in-a-lifetime disasters in less than five years, or maybe I'm OVER-equipped for that very reason, but I'm just taking things one day at a time, here. Hope we don't die! Gonna wash my hands some more and order a burrito.

As for movies, it's been too long and I literally watched like 50 things, so I'm going to do my cashout and then try to do like... two word reviews for everything. Here goes!

Killer's Kiss (1955): Bitty baby Kubrick. Pretty neat.

Taxi Driver (1976): It's Taxi Driver, what do you want from me?

These Three (1936): Fuck them kids.

Demon Seed (1977), THX 1138 (1971), The Ultimate Warrior (1975): Background noise rewatches. RIP Max. :(

The Hypnotist (2001): Anna Biller, queen of style over substance and making me dig it.

Seide (2015): Depressing as shit.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017): Makes me cry every time.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014): (㇏(•̀ᵥᵥ•́)ノ)

24 Frames Per Second (1977): My head hurts.

A Moment in Love (1956): Nice little dance thing.

Hardcore (1979): What is up with Paul Schrader and porn theatres?

Hans Christian Anderson (1952): Apparently this is where that inchworm song comes from??

The Invisible Man (2020): Real good. I miss going to the movies already.

Four Journeys Into Mystic Time: One Two Three (1978): This is definitely about polygamy, right?

Four Journeys Into Mystic Time: Trans (1978): Lady dance.

Four Journeys Into Mystic Time: Initiation (1978): Cult dance?

Four Journeys Into Mystic Time: Mysterium (1978): Couple dance!

Butterfly (1967): I don't get it.

Birdman of Alcatraz (1962): Long, but Lancaster's good.

Holy Smoke (1999): Please stop, white people.

Red River (1948): Solid oater.

The Day of the Locust (1975): Homer Simpson did nothing wrong.

The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926): Stunning.

Sorry, Wrong Number (1948): Messy noir.

Patty Hearst (1988): Does a real good job selling the brainwashing aspect. Gosh, Natasha Richardson was great.

In the Cut (2003): Ruffalo hangs dong.

The Living Idol (1957): Too much talking about panther curse, not enough panther curse.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017): Still cute, weird smushed-together characters and all. Pretty sure Vulture is my favourite MCU villain.

Wonder Man (1945): OKAY, THIS MOVIE WAS FUCKING WILD TO WATCH WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT IT WAS ABOUT FIRST. Just Danny Kaye being annoying like normal, la la la, racist opening number, fun slapstick schticks, then HE GETS FUCKING MURDERED AND WE WATCH HIS BODY BE LOADED INTO A VAN AND DUMPED IN A RIVER. IN THE FIRST TWENTY MINUTES. WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED.

The Swimmer (1968): Hey, also, what the fuck just happened. Ominous and cool and old Lancaster still fucks.

The Rainmaker (1956): COWBOY CONMAN LANCASTER.

Young Sherlock Holmes (1985): This movie has a straight-up modern-day post-credits sequel setup scene and it's WILD.

Bridges-Go-Round [Version 1] (1958): It's bridges!

Bridges-Go-Round [Version 2] (1958): It's bridges! Also, when you're making a short film in particular, music choices can completely change the vibe of your movie!

Onward (2020): Delightfully bizarre premise (OOPS HALF A DAD), great modern fantasy setting, and Pixar outdoing themselves on the animation front yet again. This movie deserved so much better than pandemic audiences.

Good-bye, My Lady (1956): Always nice when dog movies tell you it'll have a bummer ending right there in the title. Also random Sidney Poitier!

Christopher and Me (1960): Lo-fi charms.

Dance in the Sun (1953): Loved the dancer immediately lighting up a smoke at the end.

Elmer Gantry (1960): Lancaster is hypnotic and his hair is a staggering work of non-Euclidean beauty/madness.

Brussels Film Loops/Gestures/World Kitchen (1957): Watching silent shit with no soundtrack is super creepy and one of these days I will remember to put on some music beforehand.

From Here to Eternity (1953): Good enough on the drama front that the Pearl Harbour stuff actually ends up feeling superfluous?

Angels in the Outfield (1951): Grew up with the Disney version and holy shit, this is way better when you don't actually see the angels.

Brother John (1971): Buh???? Poitier's great, though.

A Scary Time (1960): It's a UNICEF ad, idk what to say.

Desperately Seeking Susan (1985): GIANCARLO ESPOSITO IN A CROP TOP.

Darker Colors (2020): Cute! Real good child actors!

Bullfight (1955): Fuck matadors.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017): *immigrant song noises*

MADE IT. Now let's be careful out there.

God, I wish I'd been able to seen Onward in theaters, but things were bad enough here when it opened that it already didn't feel safe to go to the theater. I may have... resorted to other means, but not actually watched it yet, it just feels weird. (I'm gonna, though.)

I liked Invisible Man a lot! Really liked the way it was filmed, all those great "someone is watching her/them" shots.

I need to see Homecoming again, but man, Vulture was great. That one reveal was fantastic.

Also, WOW, I have never actually seen Desperately Seeking Susan and did not know it featured Giancarlo Esposito in a crop top, that is... an excellent selling point.
