So, as mentioned, my brother's first communion AND confirmation was today, which seems... really messed up to me? We were confirmed in grade 6, which seems a lot more reasonable. The whole point of the thing is choosing to commit to Catholicism for your life, so shouldn't it come at the END of childhood, right before you kick off said life, instead of smack fucking dab in the middle of it? When I was confirmed, I was at least old enough to recognize that I was only doing it because I was supposed to. As an 8-year-old, though? 8-year-olds don't know shit! Way to strip your sacrament of any possible meaning it might have had. Apparently this is how it used to be done, but I don't care, it's dumb as shit.
ALSO, doing it at the same time as first communion? Thus doubling the length of the ceremony? AND no longer doing it within the schools, making it all the kids that age doing it together instead of just one class worth of kids, alongside any adults who are happening to be confirmed that week, further padding the length of the whole church ceremony thing to a cool three fucking hours? Did I mention these kids are EIGHT? Bra-fucking-vo, yeah, that's some brilliant goddamn planning there, kids that age are great at sitting silently for hours on end!
Ugh. All that said, I actually really like our new bishop. Seems like a cool dude, very personable.
In conclusion, I kinda wish I'd had a porny thread to tag at the time, because that would have been perfect.
