[309] quiet walks by quiet streams

Well, I didn't finish my little closet project, but I changed my sheets and the laundry is finishing up and I finally went through all my bank accounts and did some budget balancing that wasn't just the bare minimum for the first time since, oh, October? And now I'm just chilling and watching some Stardom before I go for a run and a bath and overall, I'm feeling pretty good about everything except the need to wake up for work in the morning

A pretty boring set of Oscar nominations this year, nothing super egregious or surprising other than the usual small handful of 'haha, what?' noms (NYAD AND RUSTIN ARE NOT REAL MOVIES), but enough movies that I care about are well-represented (The Holdovers and Poor Things mainly) that I am looking forward to seeing how it shakes out. I'm pre-emptively so tired of whatever stupid Barbenheimer jokes they're going to make, though.

Wikipedia Sez: Getz/Gilberto is an album by American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto, featuring pianist and composer Antônio Carlos Jobim (Tom Jobim), who also composed many of the tracks. It was released in March 1964 by Verve Records. The album features the vocals of Astrud Gilberto on two tracks, "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Ipanema") and "Corcovado". The artwork was done by artist Olga Albizu. Getz/Gilberto is a jazz and bossa nova album and includes tracks such as "Desafinado", "Corcovado", and "Garota de Ipanema". The last received a Grammy Award for Record of the Year and started Astrud Gilberto's career. "Doralice" and "Para Machucar Meu Coração" strengthened Gilberto's and Jobim's respect for the tradition of pre-bossa nova samba.

Getz/Gilberto is considered the record that popularized bossa nova worldwide and is one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time, selling over one million copies. It was included in Rolling Stone's and Vibe's lists of best albums of all time. Getz/Gilberto was widely acclaimed by music critics, who praised Gilberto's vocals and the album's bossa nova groove and minimalism. Getz/Gilberto received Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group and Best Engineered Recording - Non-Classical; it also became the first non-American album to win Album of the Year, in 1965.

Genre: Jazz

Styles: Bossa Nova, Brazilian Traditions, Brazilian Jazz, Global Jazz, Mainstream Jazz

Release Date: March 1st, 1964

Prior Familiarity: Low, but we all know The Girl from Ipanema, at least.

What I Did While Listening: Episode 4 of The Walk; I really wanted to be mad at Jo for turning us in, probably because she shares a VA with Amelia from Zombies, Run!, the worst person in Britain, but honestly, Walker and Lawrence were acting super sketch, you really kinda can't blame her, and then she got shot out of the fucking sky because of us anyway, SO.

Verdict: It's very... cute. Which sounds very condescending, but that's just how I felt towards it, at least to start with. It's all very samey for the first few tracks at least, but definitely starts doing more interesting things the longer it goes on. Pretty much perfect walking music, instantly transports you into the lead role of some Italian arthouse movie from the '60s.

Favourite Song: Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars) drops the cutesy, generic-sounding endless bossa nova doot-doot-doots for a deeply romantic vibe that really swept me away a bit without ever losing that '60s arthouse movie vibe.
