[182] they've come to take me, come to break me

A laid back day, and yes I keep having to remind myself that I need those right now. Watched a bunch of TV. Am trying to motivate myself to do laundry, but I might just put on a movie instead? We'll see! Also gotta do some proper cleaning, but I guess I can save that for the weekend.

Mom is very tired after the week she's had fighting with doctors and we still don't know what we're going to do re: radiation, but she and my brother went out for dinner and she was in bed at 7pm, so hopefully tomorrow looks better. Gonna see the new Shyamalan! It'll probably be bad!

Wikipedia Sez: The Visitors is the eighth studio album by Swedish pop group ABBA. It was released on 30 November 1981. With The Visitors, ABBA took several steps away from the "lighter" pop music they had recorded previously and the album is often regarded as a more complex and mature effort. The opening track, "The Visitors", with its ominous synthesizer sounds and the distinctive lead vocal by Frida, announced a change in musical style. With Benny and Frida going their separate ways, the pain of splitting up was explored yet again in "When All Is Said and Done". The major hit single on the album, "One of Us", also depicted the end of a love story. Elsewhere there were Cold War themes—highly topical at the time—and further songs of isolation and regret.

Genre: Pop/Rock

Styles: Euro-Pop, Swedish Pop/Rock, AM Pop, Contemporary Pop/Rock, Scandinavian Pop

Prior Familiarity: Middling. I think I knew more about its historical significance as ABBA's last album (until 2021 lol) and one of the first albums to come out on CD than I did the actual songs on it, but like, it's still very much ABBA, so I had still heard most of it at some point.

What I Did While Listening: Made perogies, danced around the kitchen.

Verdict: Fuck, it's good. It's very much lacking in the big dance floor hits that you think of when you think ABBA, and it very much does not need them. Hooky yet melancholy yet still very much them, it's kinda perfect? A breadth of styles that all feed into each other so well, I loved this a whole lot. A new favourite.

Favourite Song: ONE OF US IS CRYING, ONE OF US IS LYING IN HER LONELY BED, STARING AT THE CEILING, WISHING SHE WAS SOMEWHERE ELSE INSTEAD, ONE OF US IS SHAKING WITH A HEART THAT'S BREAKING, ONE OF US IS LONELY, ONE OF US IS ONLY WAITING FOR A CALL, SORRY FOR HERSELF, FEELING STUPID, FEELING SMALL, WISHING SHE HAD NEVER LEFT AT ALL
