Vacation Dispatch #5
Debating taking an early night tonight. It's not that I'm tired or anything, I'm just in pain and crashed on the couch last night like an animal and I'm probably overdue a session of simply curling up properly for a little while? On the other hand, I really don't like wasting the night; my time has always felt so much more valuable once the sun goes down.

Wikipedia Sez: Something Else by the Kinks, often referred to simply as Something Else, is the fifth UK studio album by the Kinks, released in September 1967. The album continued the Kinks' trend toward an eccentric baroque pop and music hall-influenced style defined by Ray Davies' observational and introspective lyrics. It also marks the final involvement of American producer Shel Talmy in the Kinks' 1960s studio recordings; henceforth Ray Davies would produce the group's recordings. Many of the songs feature the keyboard work of Nicky Hopkins and the backing vocals of Davies's wife, Rasa. The album was preceded by the singles "Waterloo Sunset", one of the group's most acclaimed songs, and the Dave Davies solo record "Death of a Clown", both of which charted in the UK top 3.
Prior Familiarity: Loooooooow.
What I Did While Listening: Danced around my hotel apartment thing like a loser (I'm on the second floor, there's nobody under me anyway). One wall is lined with these five HUGE windows that you can just completely open up and sit next to or fall out of if you want, it's terrifying and awesome.
Verdict: Some really excellent, VARIED slices of pop here. Extremely my thing. I was just planning to stop listening when the actual original album ended instead of sitting through the entire two-and-a-half-hour deluxe edition that's on Spotify, and then guess what I did instead?? Need more Kinks in my life apparently!
Favourite Song: Situation Vacant. Less than three minutes long, and they still managed to smoothly fit a fakeout ending, silence, and reprise in there?? Masterful.

Wikipedia Sez: Maxinquaye is the debut album by English rapper and producer Tricky, released on 20 February 1995 by 4th & B'way Records. In the years leading up to the album, Tricky had grown frustrated with his limited role in the musical group Massive Attack and wanted to pursue an independent project. Shortly after, he discovered vocalist Martina Topley-Bird – who he felt would offer another dimension to his lyrics – and signed a solo contract with 4th & B'way in 1993. Tricky recorded Maxinquaye the following year, primarily at his home studio in London, with Topley-Bird serving as the album's main vocalist, while Alison Goldfrapp, Ragga and Mark Stewart performed additional vocals.
Prior Familiarity: Negative something.
What I Did While Listening: Discovered that if I just throw a few pillows into one of the window sills and draw the curtains, I can make myself a creepy little nighttime people-watching nook! I want giant windows overlooking well-lit streets that I can read in of my own. :(
Verdict: I think I'd like this twice as much if it were half as long. I was kinda over it by the end, but the viiiiiiiiiiiiibes.
Favourite Song: Black Steel
Yeah, fuck it, I'm hitting the hay. Even if I don't sleep for a while yet, I'm actually gonna DO stuff tomorrow and just wanna maximize my coziness tonight. Take me away, gentle oontz oontz oontz of a bar somewhere in the block below.
