Dynamite/Rampage/Final Battle (12.08.21 - 12.11.21)

Feeling very... detached from everything/everyone this week, and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's the time of year. Maybe I just ate too much popcorn at the movies last night. I don't know. Decorated my grandmother's room for Christmas a bit, but mostly every second I spent out of doors today, I just wanted to be back in my room in the dark.

I am back in my room in the dark now. There is a Bond movie playing. I'm not remotely ready for Christmas, but I'm still in the Moore era, there's time yet, right?

Saw a friend from high school in the lineup at the car wash while waiting to pick up groceries. Peak excitement.

Detaaaaaaached. Maybe some wrestle rambles will bring me back to the night; I only have two days of week off left, I can't waste them in a total fugue.

THEY DID THE STUPID TWITTER THING EXCEPT IT WAS CM PUNK COMING OUT TO MJF'S MUSIC IN HIS HOMETOWN LOLOLOL A FLAWLESS BIT OF REVERSE TROLLING, also CM Punk hitting all of MJF's lazy hometown heat beats was brilliant and only served to continue to highlight all of Max's weaknesses since like... he was better at it?? Womp womp. Still, the voiceover on the MJF hype reel got a few chuckles out of me.

Dynamite Diamond Battle Royale: Uuuuuuugh MJF is gonna threepeat, isn't he? Maybe this is their way of giving him something big while keeping him from a title run until he's ready (fingers crossed). Anyway, hyped for the match next week, WOW Dante in Team Taz didn't last long, huh?? Wondering if the whole thing was something he worked out with Lio beforehand, or just him being a sneaky little opportunist, siding with whoever seems best for him from moment to moment since he's just biding time until his brother is back anyway? And GUESS I GOTTA WAIT ANOTHER GODDAMN WEEK FOR MY WARDLOW TURN, DAMN IT. The fact that he also has a match at Winter Is Coming bodes well, though.

The Acclaimed & 2point0 vs. Varsity Blonds, Jungle Boy & Luchasaurus: This was fine, but it's definitely the sort of slapped together, largely irrelevant match that makes me think 'they REALLY can't find time for a second women's match, huh?' throughout most of it. Worth it for the Eddie runout to keep his thing with Garcia and 2.0 going, and I was DELIGHTED to see him teaming up with Ortiz in the back (LAX BABY), but then I remembered that Santana and Ortiz are probably only getting involved as proxies for Jericho while he's on tour with his stupid band and uuuuuuugh. Save them, Eddie, please.

FTR cut a promo on the Lucha Bros and honestly, I'm kinda surprised they didn't get murdered by disgruntled fans down in Mexico after they retained the AAA titles at TripleMania over the weekend, that was some HEAT, goddamn.

Young Bucks vs. Rocky Romero & Chuck Taylor: An absolute goddamn delight of a silly spotfest, this. The Best Friends repping CHAOS remains hilarious to me, this Adam Cole/Orange Cassidy feud is the first thing Orange has done in a while that feels like it has legs (he's not a guy that needs constant plot! he's fine just doing whatever!), I adore Rocky just popping up wherever and whenever he feels like it, and of course, TRENT!!!! TRENT'S BACK!!!! It wasn't a huge surprise, since he's been doing more media stuff of late, but his cyborg neck is all healed up and he shaved his head???? THAT is gonna take some getting used to, I hope he doesn't break my heart and turn on his best friends because he's mad that they replaced him with Yuta!!

There's some setup for a random women's trios match, and then Cody vs. Sammy (Cody's douchey little deliberately accidental step toward leaving through the heel tunnel was DELIGHTFUL), and then the Men of the Year threaten me with more fucking Dan Lambert, which is just. Fucking great. Ugh.

Jamie Hayter vs. Riho: FANTASTIC. Real David vs. Goliath vibes, loved Riho's new blue gear, and it's so nice to see all of the former women's champions having something going on at the moment (Deeb/Shida III hype!!!) instead of just disappearing quietly into the background for Britt to take up all the oxygen in the division. Jamie has got to be one of the best bumpers in the business, even when she's like twice the size of her opponent, she makes every move look absolutely deadly while still coming across as a total beast. I just love her a lot???

AND THEN MY FAVOURITE MOMENT OF THE WEEK HAPPENED. TONY WAS JUST RANDOMLY GONNA INTERVIEW THE VARSITY BLONDS, BUT THEN MALAKAI APPEARED OUT OF NOWHERE, SPIT ACID IN JULIA'S FACE, AND DISAPPEARED AND THAT WAS IT. THAT WAS THE WHOLE SEGMENT. NO CONTEXT OR ANYTHING, JUST A DUDE IN A BLACK METAL ANTLER MASK LEAVING A CHEERLEADER SCREAMING ON THE FLOOR WHILE TONY STANDS THERE AND WE IMMEDIATELY MOVE ON FROM IT LOLOLOLOL AMAZING

I hope the green mist is his way of picking members to possess for a stable of his own and PAC and Julia Hart of all people were his first picks.

Bryan Danielson vs. John Silver: The final stop on the American Dragon Murders Dark Order tour, sob. Silver looked great here, real main event meat man energy going on with plenty of excellent offense, even if the finish was never in any doubt. At least Hangman ran out to save him afterward before any real bloodshed ensued, JUST A FEW MORE DAYS TO HIS FIRST TITLE DEFENSE LET'S FUCKING GO

Lucha Brothers (c) vs. FTR for the AEW World Tag Team Championship: Well, it's not the 2/3 falls epic I wanted, but still a damn good match. Probably their best one yet, despite being shorter than their last couple of clashes; I think these guys are four really excellent wrestlers without a ton of natural chemistry between the teams, so they're having to work hard for it? But the work is really showing.

Ruby Soho, Tay Conti & Anna Jay vs. Nyla Rose, The Bunny & Penelope Ford: Good shit, even if it was a little too chaotic to really whet my appetite properly for Ruby/Nyla like I think it was meant to. They got a lot of time to go and give everyone a chance to shine, but I am getting pretty sick of Bunny's brass knuckles always coming up as a crutch to give the heels cheap insta-kill wins; it's just lazy booking, you know?

FTR go after Sting and Darby in the back because they're grumpy about losing, and man, if it means they can get their win back from Grand Slam, I'm all for it. That one never sat right with me.

Hook vs. Fuego Del Sol: Alright, he's finally wrestled, he's even pretty good at it, can he please stop being the most annoying goddamn meme in wrestling now?

Adam Cole vs. Wheeler Yuta: A low-key banger, easy to lose amidst all the shenanigans from their respective entourages on the outside of the ring (which, to be clear, were also wonderful). Hopefully this is all leading to a big CHAOS debut or something, since aside from the Orange/Cole backbone, it's hard to see it going anywhere particularly meaningful? Also HEY PLZ STOP KNEEING TRENT IN THE HEAD LIKE THAT I ONLY JUST GOT HIM BACK

ROH Final Battle 2021: I mentioned this elsewhere, that it feels dumb to be sad about the (possible, probable) end of a promotion that I only started watching a few months back, and largely as background noise at that, but I've seen enough oldschool Bucks/Hangman stuff at this point for it to feel like the real end of an era. Such a bittersweet show this was, everyone just making the best of a sad situation and doing their best to go out on a high note, you love to see it. Was very happy to see both Danhausen and Chris Dickinson make it to the show, hobbling around on crutches or not. Rok-C getting all those boos when she retained was BRUTAL, though, like damn Baltimore! I love Willow too, but let the kid have her moment! FTR and Deonna showing up as AAA champions and nothing else is so goddamn weird, but Rok-C showing up on Impact should fun, while the Briscoes have TWO sets of belts that FTR could theoretically go after in what feels like it could be the most homophobic feud ever? Felt super bad for Bandido, I know his brush with COVID last year really fucked him up, and to have a second round cost him his final title defense? So awful, hopefully he and Gresham get the chance to make up for it elsewhere. GOD, I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHERE GRESHAM TURNS UP, I LOVE THAT LITTLE OCTOPUS MAN
