Autumn 2021 - Week 1

I had Fruity Pebbles for the first time today! Thanks, random AmEx offer for some weird cereals! I didn't expect them to be shaped like that!

Still have stuff to do around the house, but I got a lot done last night, so I think I'll take it easy until the stars are out again, really just enjoy my last couple of days off. Hm!

FILMS

Halloween Kills (2021): I really can't figure out how I feel about this one. It's like they worked so hard on recapturing the atmosphere of the original in 2018, then for this one they were just LET'S NOT DO THAT AGAIN, and I respect the hell out of that, I'm just not sure that it's... good? It felt like Halloween for people who don't like Halloween to me. Mostly I just spent the whole thing wishing Paul Rudd was in it instead of an egregiously miscast AMH and I will never forgive the new Ghostbusters for taking that away from me!

In This Our Life (1942): I love how the two leads have traditionally male names and it's never once addressed or relevant to anything.

Libeled Lady (1936): Fizzy and fun, with a surprising amount of depth to a couple of the characters once you start digging a bit. Gosh, I wish nice light comedies with a bit of meat on their bones like this could still get nominated for Best Picture.

Night Raiders (2021): Overreaches somewhat in terms of scope vs. what can all be done within the paint-by-numbers dystopian setting (it's trying to cover residential schools and broader colonialist issues as well as the rise of right-wing politics from the US and our relationship with them all in a generic YA setting), but overall it portrays a compelling vision of a future where people who aren't white can be given money to make cool movies.

Paprika (2006): Christopher Nolan? I don't know her.

Personal Property (1937): Gun to my head, I could not tell you why anything in this movie actually happens. Why was Robert Taylor barking like a dog on all fours so hot tho??

Le Professionnel (1981): Guess who's still sad about Belmondo? THIS PERSON RIGHT HERE! Just the coolest motherfucker ever.

Reckless (1935): Extremely upsetting because of the real-life parallels more than anything the actual film manages to pull off, poor Jean. Even in a relatively minor role, I would give up everything for Rosalind Russell.

Red Dust (1932): Astor's character is the fucking dirt worst scum and everyone spends the whole movie pining for/covering for her because she's rich and white and it suuuuuuuuuucks so bad. Aside from that and all the racism, though, I really loved it?

Red-Headed Woman (1932): What if Babyface, but the lead never has to change or grow as a person to get a happy ending and it rules??

Riffraff (1936): Spencer Tracy's face was too small for his head and I hate him.

SHORTS

Le feu, le sang, les étoiles (2008): Tough, but hopeful. We gotta keep fighting.

Hella Trees (2020): hella

Please Speak Continuously and Describe Your Experiences as They Come to You (2019): Christopher Nolan? I said I don't know her!

TELEVISION

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 6x08-6x11:I had hoped Fitzsimmons would stop being such horrible, unrelenting assholes to everybody around them once they were finally together and had nothing else to whine about, so boy was that initial two-parter a disappointment. Those two really just shat all over what was otherwise a really delightfully weird season of television for me, ugh. And THEN, in the first episode that I was actually enjoying 100% in ages, they go and kill off Davis for no good reason. BULLSHIT, HE DESERVED BETTER. Whatever, let's see if they stick the landing.

Rhodes to the Top 1x05: I liked the focus on the Nightmare Factory babies in this episode. More of them, less of Cody's horrible bitch sister, please.

Star Trek: Lower Decks 2x10: This show has really grown on me, it's a lovely little palate cleanser between seasons of more dramatic Trek fare and I am very much looking forward to more. Just a bunch of people who are clearly giant fans of the franchise goofing on it while expanding the lore and creating fun characters. WE FINALLY GOT TO SEE CETACEAN OPS AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!!! Why were the whales so horny for Rutherford, though! Plus a proper TO BE CONTINUED... season ender!! You love to see it!
