Rampage (10.08.21)
Another beautiful sunrise to watch from a distance, across a showroom, through panes of plastic and glass, framing the sign of the Ford dealership across the street. But! I'm halfway through the chopped up holiday work week, which is TRULY something to be thankful for, so!
Yesterday really kicked my ass for some reason? I felt absolutely beat to shit by the end of the day in a way that I usually don't until at LEAST Monday. I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I've been expecting my period for almost a week now and nothing seems to be happening, so maybe my hormones are just wack? My boobs hurt! My boobs almost never hurt! They are generally very happy boobs!
Okay, TMI over, back to my usual bullshit.
CM Punk vs. Daniel Garcia: Holy shit, I loved this? Easily my favourite Punk match since he's been back, though I think that's mostly to do with Garcia, MAN has he impressed me quickly. Like, limb work is nothing revolutionary in wrestling, but the way he's so savage about it, just picking out a part of his opponent's body every fight and then going about absolutely dismantling the person from that point out is really viscerally satisfying to watch? He's so good! AEW has really been loading up on fresh technical wrestlers lately, it's really cool. Also, I love that even though he's getting to talk for himself more, he's still got 2point0 perpetually hovering over him and yelling promos about him and heralding his entrances like proud dads, the fact that he doesn't really need them makes it even more oddly endearing, somehow. Anyhow, really curious who's gonna be the one to hand CM Punk (or any of these huge new hires, really) their first losses in AEW.
Not sure how I feel about Lio Rush courting Matt Sydal as much as he is Dante, I guess because Matt's so much older so it feels weird for him to not be in a mentor position? Give me Matt vs. Lio to save Dante's soul or something, idk (and then he can move on to Private Party). Though I'm extremely impressed by Rush managing to spin up an angle for him and Matt out of seemingly absolutely nothing, bodes well for what he could bring to the table, nonsense gimmick and all (he seems like he'd be into NFTs?).
Lucha Brothers (c) vs. The Acclaimed for the AEW World Tag Team Championship: My god, that Acclaimed rap went on FOREVER. Apparently AEW cut the 'fuck Ben Simmons' chants that ensued in editing, lol. ANYWAY, as long as the Young Bucks are heels, Fenix is officially the best hot tag in AEW, this match was just a ton of fun to watch, and a very fine first title defense for the Lucha Bros! Still forever enamoured by Alex Abrahantes just living his absolute best life at ringside.
Recaps of Hangman winning the Casino Ladder Match and the reveal of the TBS Championship that are precision tooled to appease me personally to soften the blow ahead of an extremely disappointing showing for the women's division!
Skye Blue vs. Jade Cargill: Yeah, they shoehorned in a one-minute squash match just so the women's division had SOMETHING this week. Pathetic. Also, the 1-2-3 punch of Jade going over Thunder Rosa in a way that highlighted just how inexperienced she is, Jade showing her whole ass on Twitter over some poor fan artist, and an interaction between Jade and Red Velvet that left a real bad taste in my mouth on Rhodes to the Top, all in the span of a week, I... really kinda don't like Jade right now! She's starting to give me some real go away heat! I don't want to feel that way (and god knows you can't form opinions of people based on reality television), but it was a lot all at once, and this did not help matters! At least they don't seem to be dropping the Thunder Rosa angle (which explains why they used Skye to eat the squash when they've otherwise been so hot on her lately, she's also one of Rosa's students)? I assumed they were just setting Jade up to be Britt's next challenger ahead of Rosa winning the belt next year, but maybe Jade will be Rosa's big obstacle on her way back to the top instead? I GUESS WE'LL SEE. DO BETTER WITH THIS DIVISION, AEW. THIS TBS TOURNAMENT HAD BETTER GET TO BE ON TV.
Ricky Starks (c) vs. Brian Cage in a Philly Street Fight for the FTW Championship: Cage wearing a Chris Kanyon shirt in the pre-match interview doing a lot to re-endear him to me after some whiny comments/passive-aggressive Twitter likes/shitty video from his wife and the ever-present question of whether he's actually vaccinated or not put him in the same territory Jade's courting. STILL HAPPY RICKY BEAT HIS ASS, THOUGH, HAHAHA NOTHING BUT RESPECT FOR MY FTW CHAMP. I really need to rewatch it, nobody had a FITE upload up by the time I had to go to bed, so I had to watch a TNT recording and half the goddamn fight took place in picture-in-picture, bleh. Loved Ricky's absolute tantrum after Brian kicked out of the spear. Loved the blood streaming down Ricky's face as he secured the win, even if the circumstances behind it were kinda nebulous. Didn't love that they didn't dress up! It's a street fight, boys! WEAR SOME DAMN JEANS. Hopefully this is the end of Cage vs. Team Taz and he can find something fresh to do instead of just kinda struggling along; Ricky remains destined for greatness.
Okay, time to actually do a bit of work before I abandon it to catch Duskulls for half the day!
