Rampage (09.10.21)
A couple of days ago, the sunlight on both my way to work and my way home was decidedly golden in hue, and yesterday, the street lights came on while I walked home. It's gonna be dark as hell both ways very soon. Trying to be zen about it. This is how time works, after all. The sun will return eventually. For now, I will freeze in the mornings because I'm stubborn as hell about busting out a warmer coat before the first snowfall.
PAC vs. Andrade El Idolo: Okaaaaaay, I will stop calling him Andrade El Midolo now, this was pretty darn good. A liiiiittle overhyped by the people who were there, it's no match of the year contender or anything, but it absolutely would have held its own on the All Out card, which is no mean feat. As it is, I'm glad it happened here! Made it more of an event than just another one of MANY men's singles matches that night, and the women's battle royale deserved to be in the main show, so. Andrade! I think he's getting used to his muscles, his movements were a LOT sharper here than in the other... two matches I've seen him in, and that one flip off the top rope was fairly crazy! And when you're wrestling PAC, king of insane acts of athleticism, it's even more impressive to have a move like that stand out! It was slower paced than a lot of PAC matches, which was a choice that worked, since Andrade never got left in the dust or gassed out and all of the big moves really got the chance to pop. I was disappointed by the cheating finish when it happened, but the post-match angle they spun it into was interesting, and I'm glad my good British goblin didn't lose clean, so it didn't hurt the match too much overall. I just wonder if it means we've seen the last of Chavo in AEW? Since it seemed like he was only there to manage Andrade (since everyone was such a hard NOPE on Vickie doing it, lol) and I'm guessing now Flair is gonna come in to do it, ugh. Whatever! Good match! There was a taser! A good time!
Sting and Darby called out Tully for his shit the other day, guess they're doing Darby vs. Shawn. I hope there ends up being more to this angle, because so far it's not interesting enough to warrant being a whole Thing. They also mentioned Ric Flair. Bleh.
The Adam Cole and Brian Danielson promo packages that followed were much better: going in, I was kinda worried that they were overstuffing this episode to showcase their shiny new toys like they did on Dynamite and the actual matches (or at least just the women's match) would get shafted on time, but these moved at a great clip, kept up the show's energy, and didn't overstay their welcome. Adam trusts Kenny and the Bucks with his life (AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I'M SURE THAT'S NOT GOING ANYWHERE) and has yet to acknowledge the Good Brothers as part of the Elite (he is going to tear this group apart from the inside and I cannot wait), Brian is gunning for Kenny and doesn't actually mention the world title, which is nice since we all know that's Hangman's shot to call and not every big money Kenny match for the rest of time needs to be for the damn belt (this is addressed to all the people obsessed with Kenny keeping the title forever because there are so many more big matches for him to have).
Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D., Rebel & Jamie Hayter vs. Ruby Soho, Riho & Kris Statlander: AND HERE'S YOUR MOMENT OF ZEN. Fuck, this ruled. It's tough to do a lot of multi-man tag matches without an actual women's tag division unless you want them feeling even more slapped together than most of the singles matches they do, but I'm all for it happening more often, since it's such an easy way to get more ladies on TV, as long as they're given the time to all shine. This thing was packed with fun spots, Ruby continues to establish herself as a joy of a presence, I desperately want to see Kris and Jamie go toe-to-toe alone at some point (HOSS FIGHT), and Riho's absence of television for so long is a goddamn travesty. THIS WAS SO GOOD. I COULDN'T STOP SMILING PRETTY MUCH THE ENTIRE TIME. Kris' little entourage of boys coming out with them (and Orange sticking around at ringside, he tried to catch Riho's gear for her!) was also delightful. Gosh, I'm happy just thinking about this one again!
Max Caster vs. Brian Pillman Jr.: Brian really picked fights with two guys named Max who go for cheap 'you're all fat' heat in the same week, huh? Good for him. This was a fine main event; obviously the opener was once again the REAL main event on Rampage, but after Mox got to wander around the crowd for what felt like forever on Dynamite, I was worried the OTHER hometown boy was just gonna fade into the background, but he got his moment in the sun to stand victorious, too! I guess that's another cool thing about there being two big shows per city now! And then Mox came out to save him from Bowens after the bell because being good good Cincinnati boys trumps him being mid-heel turn for now and they got to end the show together and just! Gosh what a tight, fun 45 minutes!! Perfect way to soothe things after Dynamite's awkward pacing this week!
