DoN Pre-Gaming
A beautiful, rainy summer day; as much as it sucks that mom's birthday barbecue on Monday had to be moved indoors, I really do love this weather so much. When it's grey and dark in the daylight but still warm enough to go outside in a t-shirt between the showers. Good stuff.
Watched some movies, got some chores done, YOU KNOW, THE USUAL. Wrote a Reggie EP but got cold feet and haven't posted it yet. Maybe I should wait for June, start a month fresh? It's gonna be a busy weekend, visiting my grandmother tomorrow and then driving down to Lloydminster Saturday because I created a monster. Hopefully no crashes this time! My brother will be driving most of the way, so... we'll see how that goes!
COVID numbers in freefall, thankfully. Wow, things got really bad for a little bit there! Not sure if the sudden drop is due to vaccination uptake or everyone just having caught the damn virus and it having nowhere left to spread like wildfire, but either way, I'll take it. RIP to the homies who didn't make it.
Alberta's got a fresh plan for re-opening, aiming for July, so we'll see how that goes, I guess. I'm pretty jaded at this point and no longer have the ability to even form opinions about what is a good idea and what isn't, since it doesn't really matter what I think, anyway. Society gonna do what it's gonna do, and I'm just along for the ride. Mom is VERY upset that the re-opening plans don't include continuing care, but I'm guessing it's to make sure numbers don't start spiking again as soon as we're back at (otherwise) 100% before they include the most vulnerable, but she's been so frustrated for so long now, there's nothing I can really say to alleviate it. As it is, I'll be visiting my grandmother tomorrow outside, and hoping the rain lets up enough for her to have a smoke or something. She's the only one among us who's fully vaccinated, and has been for months now!
No Dynamite until tomorrow night because REAL sports are happening I guess (lame), so I'll just quickly run down the card for Double or Nothing to hype myself up for Sunday!
Serena Deeb vs. Riho: Should be a banger! I kinda keep forgetting that Deeb is #AllElite, and not an NWA transplant like Thunder Rosa, so I guess Riho could actually conceivably win the belt here? I don't see it happening, though, especially since she already has one win over Deeb. At least the women got the Buy-In again, since there's only one women's match on the (kinda ridiculously long) card proper. Fucking pathetic.
Kenny Omega vs. Orange Cassidy vs. PAC: GOD I HOPE THIS RULES AS MUCH AS I'M HOPING IT'LL RULE. PAC vs. Orange at last year's Revolution was an all-timer, PAC and Kenny have put in multiple amazing matches together, this has SO MUCH POTENTIAL. Obviously Kenny's not dropping the belt until it's Hangman's time to shine (ALL OUT, BABY, DON'T LET ME DOWN), but I'm looking forward to seeing how this ends up furthering the Death Triangle/Best Friends feud. Kenny's got all his focus on PAC going into this, and they're really pushing the angle that Orange is going to pose a huge surprise threat, but in a way, Kenny is almost the third wheel here, just a goal for the other two to fight each other for. Still not sure whether this or the Stadium Stampede is gonna be the main event, there are conflicting reports??
Hikaru Shida vs. Britt Baker: The obvious title change of the night, Britt has been groomed as the heir apparent for months now, and I'm pretty sure the only reason she didn't win the eliminator tournament and take it at Revolution was because they wanted Shida to be the first one-year champion. After the way she singlehandedly carried the division on her back through those brutal early pandemic months, she deserved it, but they clearly haven't had anything for her to do as champion for a while now (save put out amazing match after amazing match), and it's time for a change. Maybe Britt can bully AEW into replacing the belt with one that isn't so stupidly tiny.
Cody Rhodes vs. Anthony Ogogo: Over the last few weeks, Cody has been doubling and tripling down on his intensely unselfaware bullshit (he WORKSHOPPED that terrible 'racism is OVER YAY AMERICA' promo with industry veterans, also some people say it's one of the best promos ever!!!) while Ogogo has just been quietly delightful and oh my god why is he the bad guy I hope he punches Cody's liver straight out of his body.
Casino Battle Royale: WHO'S GONNA BE THE JOKER??? WILL IT BE SOMEONE I'VE SEEN ENOUGH WRESTLING NOW TO RECOGNIZE??? SUSPENSE!!! My money's on either the mystery entrant or Christian to win it.
Hangman Page vs. Brian Cage: IDK, MAN. Hopefully there's more to it that ends up playing out, because that'll be two PPVs in a row where Adam just has a good, low-stakes match otherwise, and All Out is just a few months away! He needs to be ramping shit up! I guess since Cage brutally beating him back down the rankings was the thing that fucked up all his momentum, a redemptive win here could be what he needs to get back on track and get his head in the right space he'll need to be in to finally face Kenny again?
Miro vs. Lance Archer: HOSS FIGHT. Should be good, but feels more like a Dynamite match, tbh? Unless Miro drops the belt already, which would be awesome and unexpected, but I don't see it happening. Which sucks, because Lance is my favourite of all the giant smashy-type men, and he's already lost one big TNT title match; can his 'everybody dies' energy survive losing another one? I HOPE SO.
The Pinnacle vs. The Inner Circle: Again. Some more. Sigh. HOPEFULLY THIS IS FINALLY THE END OF IT. And also of the Inner Circle entirely, JUSTICE FOR PROUD 'N' POWERFUL. lol I plan on being so drunk by the time this match starts, it's gonna rule
Sting and Darby Allin vs. Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page: I don't know how to feel about a dude in his 60s getting into a ring on a PPV, but we'll see how this goes, I guess! The Ethan/Darby feud is the thing I REALLY want to see furthered after this, so that's where my attention will be. Also, as much as I enjoy them, I hope a loss here will also be the end of the delightful judgmental Disneyland boyfriends as a tag team, I want to see them make a go of it as singles guys.
The Young Bucks vs. Jon Moxley and Eddie Kingston: Definitely the match I am most hyped for; the Bucks never miss in PPVs so it should be a phenomenal match, I remain obsessed with where the fuck their characters are going, Mox and Eddie are my current comfort characters who brighten my day immeasurably with their mere existence, also I have no idea who's gonna win?? At first, I was pretty sure the Bucks weren't going to be losing the titles, especially to two singles guys newly tagging together, but it's been a 200+ day run, which is solid, Hangman and Kenny were two singles guys newly tagging together and they were GREAT champions, and just... it's all gotta tie into wherever this whole storyline with the Elite is going, so ????? ANYTHING FUCKING GOES AT THIS POINT. Right now my dream fantasy booking scenario is Mox and Eddie win the belts, eventually lose them to FTR (they deserve a longer run, and I like the parallels of them being the ones to take it from the singles guys again), who then lose them to Santana & Ortiz (JUSTICE!!!), making all of the tedious Inner Circle/Pinnacle bullshit worth it. Which means the Bucks will definitely retain, lol. WHATEVER, I TRUST THEM.
Overall, I find it kind of an underwhelming card? Certainly the one I'm feeling the least since All Out, anyway, but it'll be the first PPV with a full crowd in over a year, when the last one was literally the best show they've ever done (with the single best match they've ever had), so surely they'll be pulling out all the stops to make it something special. SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!!!
